Attorney-General and Minister of Home Affairs Freundel Stuart accompanied by Chief Fire Officer Chesterfield Mayers and other officials from the Ministry of Home Affairs toured the Airport Fire Station, Worthing and Fire Service Headquarters yesterday. A delegation from the Fire Service Association also participated in the familiarisation tour of the fire stations where the Attorney-General saw first hand the physical accommodation and conditions under which fire officers were working.
Minister Stuart gave the assurance that improvements would be undertaken immediately to ameliorate the conditions at fire stations. The Minister said he was treating the situation as one of priority. Some of the matters discussed included the congestion and lack of space at fire service headquarters, sub-standard conditions and accommodation at the airport station, delays regarding the start of the new airport fire station, relocation and alternate accommodation of some sections of the department and the accessibility of parts for some defective fire appliances.
The Attorney-General also reassured fire officers and members of the media of governments commitment to establishing a fire station at Six Roads, St. Philip and the future relocation of the fire station at Weston in St. James.
