Fire At BL&P Generating Station Quickly Put Out

Yesterday morning  the quick response of The Barbados Light & Power's (BL&P's) operating staff and the Barbados Fire Service personnel averted what could have been a major catastrophe.
 
At around 9:15 a.m., a fire was detected on one of Light & Power's 20 Megawatt (MW) Steam Turbine generating units at the Spring Garden Generating Station. The operating personnel immediately sprung into action and, with the assistance from the Barbados Fire Service, the fire was quickly brought under control and extinguished.
 
When the fire was detected, the generating unit was soon taken out of service and alternative generators put into operation to avoid disruption of supply to customers.
 
While the situation is still being assessed, it appears that damage was limited to a small section of low voltage and control cables and there was no apparent damage to any of the major sections of the generator.

Robocop, thanks for stopping by. Firefighters are truly a rare bunch. You get up every day proceed to work and never know if you will return home. We are often exposed to serious danger and yet we return the next to face the same. Why? because its our job to do so.

In response to your other question, the answer is no. We are never truly compensated for the risks and danger we face daily. What dollar figure adequately addresses the lost of life or limb when we respond to emergencies. We in the Barbados Fire Service have been very fortunate over the years, to date there have been no lives lost in the line of duty.
